Social Studies Strand

1. Title of Project From Columbus to the Colonies using Cornell Notes

2. Description This project will consist of an advanced PowerPoint that will explain events from the First Americans to the founding of the English colonies while at the same time teaching the process of taking Cornell Style notes.

3. Deliverables The deliverable will consist of a PowerPoint that will cover the content consisting of information from the First Americans to the English Colonies in 1763. This PowerPoint will also explain the process of taking Cornell Notes

4. Instructional Rationale The technology will allow me to instruct a large group of students in the process of taking Cornell notes that will serve as the note taking format for my class. At the same time it will allow me to cover the background information for content standard 11.1.2.

5. Implementation This project will be used as an introduction to Cornell Notes as well as instruction on how to take Cornell notes. It will also serve as a medium for delivering the content information.

6. Resources Needed In order to complete this project I will need to use the application PowerPoint, the use of the internet, and the application I movie to insert movie clips. I will also need to use various history textbooks and possibly internet sources such as wikipedia for research.

7. Process I initially will need to storyboard the PowerPoint in order to get a general idea of how the PowerPoint will be laid out. I then will need to complete the research on the content information and find any media that I would like to link to my PowerPoint. Next I will need to record any video of Cornell notes and/or take still photos of Cornell Notes format. Finally I will need to create the actual Powerpoint, link all media, set up transitions and timings, and finally present.

1. Title of Project Social Science Powerpoint Projects

2. Description Students research a historical event from the late 19th Century to the present. They will create a powerpoiint presentation that they will present to the class along with administering a quiz after they have presented their projects.
Students will utilize books from the school library to online research resources as well as integrate visuals (photos) into the ppt.
3. Deliverables I will upload two powerpoint projects completed/created by two groups from the previous school year. I will also search for any powerpoint projects from the previous two years that I have assigned this project.
There will be at least two powerpoints, as well as the packet that outlines the expectations and deadlines for each portion of the assignment.
4. Instructional Rationale I have been assigning this project because it helps the students obtain the following skills necessary to compete in today’s job market. It will also give students the skills necessary for completing college level assignments/projects.
The assignment itself is assigned towards the beginning of the second semester. Students will have some background knowledge of historical events, so the topics that they choose will be based upon what interested them the most during regular instruction.
This assignment will be student directed, they will ask questions of themselves to direct their course of research. With each assignment students will be given the standard(s) that address that specific topic.
5. Implementation How will you use this project with your students – be as detailed as possible.
The first step of the project requires students to use various research materials to find the information needed to complete the project. Through collaboration with the librarian at our school site a web site as been constructed to have resource sites and topics provided for students, so that they do not have to go searching on the Internet. Also the resources that we provide are valid/reliable resources for our students to use.
After collecting their data and taking at least four- five pages of notes (front to back), students will locate visual aides to embed in the powerpoint projects. A collection of 50-75 photos should be suffice to give students enough visual aides to help our visual learners to comprehend what their classmate is teaching.
Third, student will create a storyboard before they ever go to the computer and begin creating their powerpoint.
The fourth step for students is to create their powerpoints, embed their photos and music if they wish to use music that personifies the time period or event that they are teaching.
Students are also required to create a quiz/test that is to be administered once instruction is complete.
Students will present their projects by projecting them through the LCD projector, they will present their project as well field any questions from the class. Essentially the students will become a teacher for one day.
The students will grade the quizzes/tests and turn them in the next day with a grade to be implemented in each students overall grade.
Throughout the project, the students will keep a journal of what they did while working on their project and what they learned as they were completing the project.
6. Resources Needed I need an LCD projection system, as well as enough computers to sustain an entire class to conduct its research for each individual topic. The project itself takes about 6-8 weeks to complete. As the majority of this project is completed outside of class time. There should also be a minimum of two days scheduled in the library to gather enough information to take notes.
Parent involvement is also encouraged, as I have a sign-off sheet for parents as students complete various stages of the project.
A sufficient number of supplemental reading materials in the school’s library is also essential, books/literature that students should have to look up and research key points for their project will help them gain valuable skills when they are assigned research projects in college.
7. Process Step 1: Identify Topic that interests them the most. (Provide top three topics of interest).
Step 2: Research the topic. Identify at least five resources to used for the project, (2-Internet, 2-Books, 1-Periodical or Textbook), as well as provide a bibliography of resources, and identify any added multimedia that will be utilized as visual aides.
Step 3: Write approximately 4-5 pages of notes front to back.
Step 4: Create a file in ebackpack to store between 50 – 75 pictures to be embedded in the powerpoint.
Step 5: Create a storyboard, complete with notes and outlines of where pictures will be embedded. This will allow students to make corrections before they move to working on the computer.
Step 6: Students must have their storyboards reviewed by their parents, a peer and or teacher (at least 2 of the 3 people listed), before moving on to creating their powerpoint.
Step 7: Complete the powerpoint slides (there are at least 2-3 days scheduled during class time to go to the computer lab or library to use computers).
Step 8: Once the poweroint is completed, students will make a quiz/test that will be given at the end of their project. The presenters will take them home, grade them and turn in the results to me, so that I can enter the grades into the grade sheet. (Quiz scores count on class’ overall grade)
Step 9: Students will also create an advanced organizer for students to follow the presentation as their classmates present. Words are omitted to ensure that students pay attention during the presentation.
Step 10: Throughout the project students keep and make journal entries from the research portion, to taking notes, creating the storyboard, creating the powerpoint, how they felt the presentation went, and what they thought about the project overall.

I will be implementing a virtual vacation project where my students will research National parks, Monuments, and vacation spots of North America. Each will present them via powerpoint to the class and learn to turn in their projects using the drop box in the public folder of EBackpack.

Using Inspiration to breakdown the Causes of the Great Depression

After todays demonstration of the Inspiration suite, I found it very helpful to design a type of chart to breakout and look at the various reasons why the Great Depression occured. I would like to further breakdown the similarities and between how the Hoover and Roosevelt Administrations approached the setting government policies. Inspiration will be very valuable for interdisciplinary work as well, as myself and the English teacher that I will be working with in a new program we have at Mt. Miguel, we can assign essay assignments rather than multiple essay assignments, and we can both use this as an instrument.

I would like to create a powerpoint which introduces the first unit in psychology; this includes an overview of what psychology is, a bit of the history, and several historical figures. I want to incorporate some of the new powerpoint skills I have learned and the available resources.

1. Title of Project LANDFORMS/BODIES OF WATER POWERPOINT ASSIGNMENT
2. Description This assignment requires students to create a PowerPoint presentation that focuses on major landforms in Latin America. Each slide will consist of an image of the specific landforms, informational text, and links for more information about each landform / body of water.
3. Deliverables I will upload a sample PowerPoint and a brief overview of the project (Word).
4. Instructional Rationale This assignment is designed to have students research Latin American landforms (rivers, mountain ranges, deserts, etc.), report-out brief information about each landform/body of water and provide links about each landform/body of water.

5. Implementation Students will complete this assignment during the Latin America unit on their iMac computers. Students will have over four hours in class to complete the assignment. Once complete, students will present their PowerPoint to class.

6. Resources Needed Students will need their iMacs, PowerPoint software and access to the Internet. On the Internet, students will need to locate sites with images and data of specific landforms/bodies of water.

7. Process This assignment will take approximately three days to complete. Once the assignment is ready for submission, students will upload the PowerPoints onto their eBackpack accounts and into the teacher Dropbox.

Design Patterns
A number of years ago WebQuest creator, Bernie Dodge, noticed that there were similar types of WebQuests popping up on the web. As a result he created a series of design patterns to help teachers plug their ideas into a specialized templated. This has helped shorten the creation process and provided teachers with a more structured template to follow.

GardenQuest
Bernie recently unveiled a cool new tool that will help you create a solid WebQuest. Basically you select a design pattern and then are walked through the process. No longer do you have to worry about writing web pages, uploading files, or making it look "pretty" - all of that has been automated and integrated into an easy-to-use web-based tool. Welcome to Visions 2005

As mentioned in the e-mail I sent out, Visions 2005 is going to be a quick overview of available resources, possible project types, and some application skills. The most important part of the three days we have together will be your development of a project proposal. In order to keep your projector at the end of the school year, you will have to attend two follow-up sessions during the school year and share your completed project. Almost a third of the our twelve hours together will be spent working on this proposal and creating a plan as to how you are going to complete it.

This blog-based web site will serve as the hub of information for the social studies strand. Each of you will receive an invitation to join the blog from Blogger.com. Please accept the invitiation and join it. I will be asking you to post your proposal idea at the end of the day on Monday.

Project Possibilities

When deciding on your project, select an idea that can be implemented this school year. Retention of the projector rests on the completion of this project! You are also going to be asked to upload an artifact (a Word document, link to web page, PowerPoint presentation, etc.) to the ETR Teacher Exchange. By the end of the day, you should start the Visions Project Proposal: Social Studies Strand.

PowerPoint
Now that you have that shiny new projector, for many of you this is where you are going to want to start. That is great! Using PowerPoint is a great first step. Make sure to attend one of the PowerPoint sessions on Tuesday.

Web-Based Project
You will need to already have some basic web design knowledge, but you too can create a web-based project that you can use for your students. This idea is wide open, you can use an existing standards-based lesson plan or create something new. For Social Studies the amount of available resources is vast!

WebQuest
This project type used to be amazingly time consuming, plus you needed a moderate amount of tech experience. Well, that is no longer the case. The creation of GardenQuest (officially available Sept. 1) will walk you through the process of creating a WebQuest AND take care of the techy stuff that has stymied teachers for years. Plus, with the WebQuest Design Patterns, selecting the type of project you are looking for is much easier.
